Just pop one your camera while filming its not a replacement for a boom op or lavs but in a pinch it could really save your ass.

I use my DSLR to record short videos for YouTube and I was not happy with the built in mic. After doing some research on external microphones I went with the Rode video mic. It's a great little mic and sounds great right out of the box. There is some adjustments that can be made but I havent need to mess with that yet. Another plus is the included Fuzzy wind screen. If you plan on filming or recording outside its a must.

I've been using this on a Canon 6D for about 2 years. Great microphone, the sound recorded is pretty close to flat which was what I was looking for since I like to be able to proces it to my taste later on in pro tools. It's a great tool for live events. Also something I like a lot about it is after almost 2 years with it and using it almost every weekend during a whole year, I've only changed batteries twice!

For an affordable mic, it fits the bill. Much better than the built in mic on my Nikon D800 but if you are looking for amazing sound quality with little to no background noise I would suggest looking around some more.

The background noise was incredibly loud, no matter connected to a camcorder or DSLR. It's just like an amplified version of on-board audio, which simply amplifies everything including noise. Plus, the Fuzzy Windjammer does not do its job. And it shed its fur everywhere, almost turned the original windshield into grey color....Horrible.

The microphone works great! Catches background noise but what one wouldn't? All in all 5 stars it sounds great.
